WAX FACTS

Let’s talk about wax

Read more about what we use and why in this blog post.

We get a lot of questions about the wax we use, so let’s dive into this discussion. We use a custom blend of natural soy wax and natural coconut wax. Custom blend means exactly that - I buy the two waxes separately and blend them according to my formula. I actually use a couple different ratios depending on the scent, so that each candle casts scent into your space in a tasteful but noticeable way. There is nothing worse than buying a candle, getting home, lighting it and then…nothing. This is a known and unfortunate side effect of using 100% soy wax - it can tend to “trap” scent once burning. Yes, it’s 100% soy and natural, but let’s be honest, we all want to smell the candles we bought.

Enter coconut wax. This is something I stumbled upon about 6 years ago while reading a blog that suggested incorporating a small percentage of coconut wax with soy wax. Well, it changed everything for us. Coconut wax, also natural and sustainably harvested, carries scent amazingly well, and adding this was a game change for our candles. We were doing this long before coconut wax was trending, which it is now. There are many pre-blended coconut waxes on the market now. Some include soy or apricot wax, some include paraffin, but none of the formulas are disclosed to the maker because suppliers are protecting that information.

What about those candles you see at retailers that say premium soy wax blend, luxury soy wax blend, soy coconut wax blend, etc? Well, the short answer is, you still don’t know what you’re really getting. Other words like “non-toxic,” “clean,” etc are used in branding because they recognize the market shift and want their piece of the pie. Large retailers will continue changing their marketing language and tactics. There is no real “rule or law” about the percentage of soy wax required for a candle to be called a “soy wax candle,” so my encouragement is to know your maker and ask questions. I am honest and forthright about what I use, and I believe in my products.

Soy and coconut waxes are eco-friendly, renewable, biodegradable, clean burning and non-toxic. It’s a simple choice, and one we are proud to make with every hand-blended and poured batch of candles.

Pare, rhymes with care, and that’s who we are. Until next time,

Joanna
